My Love Affair With Vital Proteins

I love Vital Proteins. This is probably the number one thing I recommend to all my clients. Almost no one I work with I've been using their collagen peptides for awhile now as a protein source in just about anything. That's because it's completely tasteless when mixed. It's an easy way to get protein in throughout the day without chugging down chalky (and chemical-filled) shakes. But, even better, Vital Proteins has done wonders for my hair, skin, and nails!

What is collagen?

Collagen is one of the most abundant proteins in our bodies. Collagen forms elastic fibers in the body, essentially creating the infrastructure for the entire body - hair, skin, nails, cartilage, bones & joints are all made from collagen!

What does it do?

Our body continually produces collagen. However, as we age, collagen production slows, resulting in the aging processes that we all experience - hair thinning, loss of skin elasticity & wrinkles, or joint stiffness. Additional factors, such as poor diet or smoking, can cause inadequate collagen production.

Supplementing with Vital Proteins collagen peptides has been a game changer for me.

My skin feels incredible. Let's be honest - I'm 31 now, which means I can't just go to bed at 2am and wake up looking somewhat human, like I could at 21. It's a shame, I know. So, I have to put in a little extra legwork to keep a youthful appearance. Collagen is in tons of facial creams and ointments, but what those creams can't do is work from the inside. Well, unless you eat it...but...

Regardless, ingesting collagen daily ensures that you're getting enough of the amino acids that your body requires to naturally create collagen. My skin feels softer and it keeps that baby-faced elasticity that helps prevent wrinkles. This means that my skin stays supple and maintains that youthful glow that I so unwittingly didn't enjoy in my 20's. (Ahh, fountain of youth, please speak to me!) But seriously, the more moisture your skin can retain, the less likely you are to have loose skin, wrinkles, or, you guessed it, cellulite. Again, I'm not making any claims that collagen prevents cellulite (because it doesn't) but the healthier and firmer your skin is, the less likely you are to see those unsightly dimples.

My hair has never felt better.  Your hair is made of keratin protein, not collagen, but collagen's amino acid complex helps aid in strengthening strands and preventing hair loss just the same. Like it's moisturizing properties for skin, collagen can aid in providing moisture to hair follicles at the scalp, promoting growth at the root. Healthy hair follicles, once they get the nutrients that they need, will grow faster! The healthier your hair is, the less likely you are to have split ends and breakage. I used to be plagued with cutting inches of dead hair off at each hair appointment, but since I started using Vital Proteins, my hair has been so much softer and healthy! And for those of you who have asked: yes, that is ALL my own hair!

My nails are growing. Nails are created the same way as hair, by building keratin protein. So it's no wonder that ingesting more collagen will make my nails grow alongside my hair (and heaven knows my nails need it).

Collagen keeps joints healthy.  I don't know how many times I've heard, "All that running is going to hurt your knees." I mean, I know that isn't true, but that doesn't mean that I can't prevent any additional damage from being done. Collagen is the agent that allows our bones to move without pain. Healthy joints are crucial for my longevity as a runner - and I plan to be running for a long time.

Collagen is the perfect post-workout recovery protein.  Two scoops provides 20g of protein but the best part is that collagen peptides are highly digestible, meaning that it's not wasted in the body. Especially after a long workout, immediately getting in amino acids (glycine and arginine) that promote muscle recovery is crucial to staying healthy as a runner!

It's a pure form of protein.  Collagen Peptides are gluten free, dairy free, Paleo & Whole30 approved, and no sugar added. There's a single ingredient (and no, this isn't vegetarian and vegan friendly!). Which means that there's no chemical additives and artificial ingredients. Can't beat that!

How do you use it?

The best part about the Vital Proteins collagen peptides is that it dissolves tastelessly in just about everything. I will say that I think it gives plain water a slight taste, but my personal favorite is to blend it into my smoothies or my morning coffee. You never taste a thing! There is literally nothing worse than finishing a workout or long run and trying to choke down some thick disgusting protein shake.

I personally prefer the unflavored proteins over all the other flavors, but they do have some other options, such as Vanilla & Matcha Collagen Peptides (these are awesome if you're making lattes!), and the newest addition is their line of Collagen Creamers - Vanilla, Gingerbread and Coconut. These are all really good options if you're someone that doesn't drink their coffee black. There is also a line of flavored Beauty Waters, but to be honest, the flavors are a bit too fragrant for me and I'm not much of a fan of the taste.

Where can I get it?

Vital Proteins offers a subscription service from their website (this is the best way to save money!). If you're using it daily, the large tub is your best bet and I go through enough that the subscription service makes the most sense. You can also order individual single-serving travel sticks (the easiest way to carry it anywhere!) or peptides in capsule form. Of course, if you're just looking to try it out, you can order a single order of anything you'd like. Ordering it directly from the website is also your cheapest option!

If you're an Amazon Prime person, you can get it here also in the large tubs, as well as single-serving travel sticks
