We all have our first days at new positions—the start of a semester, transitioning into a new job, internship meetings, and those types of stressful (but exciting!) kick-off days. Many people say to “dress for success,” but comfort and confidence are important, too!

If you have the “What should I wear today?” question running through your mind, don’t stress. Look through your wardrobe for items that make you feel like yourself but that also have business qualities, such as button-up shirts with clean lines and trousers that you can style in multiple ways. You probably have everything you need for a first day outfit, you just need to find the right combination.

Since WFH became the norm, office attire is transitioning as well, so you may have more options than you think. Start with a business appropriate item—black pants, loafers, or an office dress—and work around it. Add in clothing that shows your personality and you’ll be sure to start your new position on the right foot.

Leather Pants and Neutrals

Shop: Top | Faux Leather Pants | Boots | Coat | Work Bag

Leather (and faux leather) pants are a great way to elevate a simple look without having to introduce too much color or pattern. They’re also easy to dress up or down for either a casual work outfit or a more elegant interview or first day look. To keep the look cohesive and minimal, pair the pants with a solid color top with slight details and a black bootie; we love a suede boot with a bit of a heel. Top the look with a warm layer, like a peacoat or trench that elongates the body, as well as a professional work bag, leather briefcase, or your favorite purse. This look is perfect for events, meetings, interviews, and anything else.

Sweater and Silk

Shop: Silk Dress | Sweater | Woven Flats | Belt | Gold Hoops

Silk midi skirts and layers are on-trend, and they make a great base for dressy outfits that are also ultra comfortable, whether you’re working from home, trekking across campus, or commuting to work. Consider a washable silk dress to add to your wardrobe.  The one from Quince is practical and comes in several versatile colors—plus, we love the length. Pull a thick sweater over top to keep you warm—you can wear the sweater as-is or belt it for a seamless, cropped look. Finish the look with effortless jewelry (like gold hoops) and a pair of simple shoes, like chunky loafers, leather mules, calf boots, or heels, for a more formal final look. It’s also an easy outfit to pack because silk doesn’t take up much room in your luggage, making it a great option for conferences or business trips.

Tip: This look can easily transition to warmer months when paired with a light cardigan or crop top, instead of a sweater.

Preppy, But Casual

Shop: Turtleneck | Jeans | Blazer | Sneakers | Backpack

This outfit has a more laid back style, perfect for college students or business casual environments that are cool with jeans in the office. Start with a pair of mom jeans or ‘90s-inspired straight leg jeans for a lengthened appearance. Then, dress up your top half with a turtleneck for a soft and warm base layer and a blazer over top for an intentionally business-like finish. Wear shoes you’ll be able to walk in all day—like your go-to sneaker—but make sure they’re clean! You can always add in jewelry and accessories or another layer for warmth, depending on the season. We like this preppy first day look with a cute little backpack, too—because it’s practical and brings back our nostalgia for Gossip Girl.

Sweater Vest

Shop: Sweater Vest | White Shirt | Flare Pants | Chelsea Boots | Backpack

Who are we to ignore sweater vests? These cozy layers are having a moment and they bridge the gap between casual attire and office attire with ease. For an effortlessly cool first day look, wear a sweater vest over a structured shirt; you can play with color, prints, and patterns or keep things united with just solid colors. For pants, consider casual legging-like flare pants that look just like trousers. They’re perfect for students and people who are on the go throughout the day. Complete the look with comfy socks under a pull-on Doc Marten boot and a weather-proof backpack.

Maximalist Textures

Shop: Striped Dress | Faux Leather Blazer | Bucket Hat | Crochet Tote | Heels

If you love color, pattern, and mixing styles together, let your first day outfit show that about you. Wear a bold and colorful dress that draws attention, and dress it up or down with items that you love. We paired it with a faux leather blazer that adds texture, but keeps a slim look and an earthy block heel. If you want, add in a bucket hat or headband (depending on the weather) for a head-to-toe look. Don’t forget a carry-all bag as well, like a handmade crochet tote that matches your shoes and brings in that “cottage core” element. This look will have you feeling on top of the world and in your element for any occasion, and at the very least, it’s a conversation starter!

Layered and Cohesive

Shop: Top | Bodysuit | Puffer Hat | Cargo Pants | Shoes | Bracelet

This look might just be my favorite first day outfit on the list. Start with a bodysuit as a shaping base layer and top it with straight-leg cargo pants that are flexible, but dressy enough for the office. On top, wear a blouse like this “math grid” pattern—especially suitable for someone working in finance, analytics, or a classroom. Add loafers and low-key jewelry to this look to dress it up for the office, or wear slippers if you’re working from home. A bright puffer is perfect for adding a pop of color in the colder months and doesn’t take away from the versatile, yet polished final look.

When it comes to first day outfits, wear an outfit that makes you feel powerful and confident. It can be fun to step outside your comfort zone, but your first day at a brand new job or internship may already have you feeling a bit nervous. Choose clothing that makes you feel capable without being uncomfortable, and don’t forget to consider the weather on your commute or for those shifting office temperatures. Let your first day be an opportunity to introduce your style and personality through clothing and your abilities.
