When you think of activewear, big brand names might first come to mind, but then you may find yourself struggling to name sustainable activewear brands. Why does it matter if your clothing is sustainably made? First, think about the activities you’re participating in and the amount of time you spend in the clothing.
If you’re spending a few hours sweating at the gym or long days in the outdoors, you may have specific needs for your clothing. Consider which fabrics you’re allowing your skin to be in close contact with, especially when you’re sweaty.

Girlfriend Collective
Girlfriend Collective first hit the market with leggings made from recycled water bottles and has since grown to sell a wide range of gender neutral activewear. From sports bras to socks and track pants to maternity leggings, you can find it all on Girlfriend’s site. The brand is SA8000 and WRAP-certified, meaning it manufactures in safe and fair factories. The brand’s recycled fabric is also Standard 100 certified by Oeko-Tex and is BPA-free. I’ve been a longtime fan of Girlfriend Collective for its sustainable activewear; they also have a great rewards program, ship in fully recyclable packaging, and release new colorways every season.

The North Face
Though The North Face isn’t a brand with entirely sustainable or ethical practices, the brand is making strides to be better for the planet. The North Face has stated that it is focusing on circularity and aiming to have “recycled, responsibly-sourced renewable or regeneratively grown” fabrics on all apparel by 2025. You should always be skeptical of greenwashing in the fashion world, but it does seem like The North Face is working for a better future and planet.
