When I got my first prescription pair of eyeglasses, my doctor asked me if I wanted to add on a blue light-blocking film. It was the first time that I had ever heard of it, and I asked a bunch of questions before agreeing. Once I started using my new blue light glasses, I knew that I would never go back to regular glasses.

What Is Blue Light?

Blue light has one of the shortest wavelengths and highest energy that is visible to our eyes. This means that this type of light puts a higher strain on our eyes and leads to fatigue more readily than other forms of visible light. Unfortunately, smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other electronic devices give off large amounts of blue light. The good news is that there are plenty of options to deter the negative effects of blue light, including special glasses. Keep reading for a list of some of the best blue light glasses on the market.

What are the benefits of using blue light glasses?

On top of being an excellent opportunity to accessorize, these glasses have a special protective layer that filters out–or blocks–harmful blue light, helping to counteract the light’s disruptive effects (read: allowing you to scroll your phone without eye strain).

A pair of blue light glasses can help at bedtime, too. While it might be enticing, checking your phone right before bed can also make it more difficult to fall asleep, as blue light can alter your sleep pattern. If you can’t leave your phone outside the bedroom, why not bring a pair of glasses in?

Who would benefit from wearing blue light glasses?

Since blue light makes up about one-third of all visible light, almost anyone can benefit from wearing blue-blocking lenses. However, individuals such as students, content creators, working professionals, gamers, or anyone who spends a lot of time on a phone, computer, or other electronic device can see improvement from wearing blue light glasses.

Do you have to have an eye prescription to wear blue light glasses?

Perhaps the best thing about blue light lenses is that you don’t need an eye prescription to wear them. In fact, there are many glasses on the market that have a blue-blocking film on clear lenses. This means you don’t have to fail your eye test to get a pair!

How to choose your perfect pair of blue blocker glasses

If you’ve never had to wear glasses before, choosing the right pair may seem more than a little daunting. Eyeglasses are just like sunglasses, so if this is your first time getting a pair of non-sunnies, stick to the shapes that you’re familiar with and that you know will complement your face shape. Once you build your confidence in your glasses game, you can branch out with patterns and bold colors. Or, dive right into the deep end! (The water is fine.)

Of course, comfort should play a starring role in what type of glasses you decide to go with. If you know you prefer glasses with nose pads, stay away from ones without them. Many stores offer “try before you buy” programs or have return policies. Be sure to read the fine print before hitting purchase!

Where are the best places to buy blue light glasses?

You can purchase blue light glasses from your eye doctor or anywhere that normally sells regular lenses. Many retailers have jumped on the blue-blocking train, meaning there are endless stores to shop. Check out some of our favorite blue light glasses below!
